JOSH SANDERSON – Shooting his was into the CLHOF

Born in Orangeville, Ontario – nicknamed “Shooter” - Josh Sanderson is a gifted playmaker and goal scorer – literally, a magician with a lacrosse stick and ball.

Quiet spoken, Josh is as modest and humble a person you could possibly meet. Hailing from a clan of lacrosse players, Josh Sanderson never lacked for someone to play catch with. His father Terry; Uncles - Shane, Lindsay and Phillip; Josh’s two sons - Cam and Dylan; cousins Chris, Ryan, Brandon, Phillip, Nathan and Dustin along with nephews Nolan and Carter all played lacrosse in Orangeville, Brampton and other centres in Ontario.

Josh Sanderson is not the first of his family to be inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. His father Terry (posthumously) and Uncle Lindsay were inducted together in 2015 in the Builder category.

Speaking on Josh’s 2022 induction, Lindsay Sanderson commented, “Terry would be over the moon happy to hear the news of Josh being inducted into the CLHOF as it is the ultimate honour for a player. Personally, I was always amazed at what Josh accomplished particularly for his size. His successes individually and as a member of a team speak for themselves. I am not surprised Josh is being inducted as he has earned it”.

Standing 5’7” and weighing 150 pounds, playing for his hometown Orangeville Northmen, Josh Sanderson was the OLA Junior A Rookie of the Year in 1994; the MVP in 1996; and he led the league in scoring in 1996 and 1998. With Sanderson contributing to the standard of excellence, Orangeville won three Minto Cups (1993, 1995, and 1996). Josh Sanderson’s all-time points in OLA Junior A were 347 goals and 390 assists for 737 points in 166 games.

Moving up to play Senior lacrosse with the Brampton Excelsiors, Josh won three Mann Cup championships (2002, 2008, and 2009). Josh was the Mann Cup MVP in 2002. In Major Series lacrosse he totaled 554 goals and 898 assists for 1,452 total points in 303 games. He led the OLA Major Series as top scorer in three consecutive seasons - 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Over 19 seasons of play in the National Lacrosse League, Josh Sanderson played for six teams winning the Champions Cup in 2005 and 2009. When he retired, he was the fourth highest scorer in NLL history having scored 484 goals along with 973 assists for a total of 1457 points in 290 games. Josh ranks second in NLL history in assists (908) and games played (268).

Josh Sanderson has been recognized as a league MVP at every level. He was acknowledged as the OLA Junior A MVP in 1996; Major Series Lacrosse in 2002; the 2002 Mann Cup; the National Lacrosse League in 2009 and at the Presidents Cup in 2011.

When asked for his reaction upon hearing he was to be inducted into the CLHOF, Josh responded, “I was very honored and excited when I received the news. It is a special accomplishment and I’m humbled to be joining all the great players and builders in our game”.

In recalling particularly memorable times during his storied career, Josh stated, “A few special moments would be the Minto Cup in 1996, It was a great series that went seven games and we won game 7 in OT. The Mann Cup in 2002 and 2009 that went seven games were also special. It was especially great to be part of those teams and teammates”.

Being part of the lacrosse factory known as Orangeville, Josh Sanderson acknowledges many people helped contribute to his personal success. But no person played a greater role than his father Terry Sanderson – “My Dad is the biggest reason I'm joining the CLHOF. He taught me so much throughout my career. Also, so many of my coaches growing up and my cousins who I played countless hours with helped, along the way”.

Josh Sanderson also coaches lacrosse. He has been behind the bench for numerous minor lacrosse championship teams. Josh spent a year as an assistant coach with the Junior A Northmen, along with serving on the Executive. Josh was the Assistant General Manager of the Toronto Rock of the NLL. In addition, he was the General Manager of the Oakville Rock of Major Series Lacrosse. Currently, Josh Sanderson is the Offensive Coordinator and Director of Player Personnel for the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League.

Josh Sanderson amassed numerous team championships and incredible scoring statistics – which combine to make him a Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame Member in the Player category – Class of 2022.

Josh Sanderson has been inducted into four Sports Halls of Fame: the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2022, the Orangeville Sports Hall of Fame in 2022, the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2021, and the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in 2016
