DOUGLAS LUEY – Lacrosse Building for almost Five Decades

Born in St. Catharines Ontario, introduced to lacrosse by his three older brothers, Doug Luey began playing his minor lacrosse at age 9 in the Port Dalhousie and the St. Catharines Minor Lacrosse Associations. His lacrosse career involved being a member of the Oshawa Green Gaels in 1976 and 1977 which included playing for Jim Bishop.

Doug Luey has been involved in lacrosse for almost 50 years, mostly in the Whitby/Oshawa community. His long-term commitment has taken place in Ontario, across Canada and internationally. Doug has held numerous positions including Team Coach, Manager, and Team and League Executive at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Along with being a committed “behind the scenes” team and league organizer, Doug Luey has also coached - beginning at age 18, which resulted in winning several provincial championships. His coaching includes both Oshawa Minor Lacrosse (1981-1983) and Whitby Minor Lacrosse (1985-1999). In addition, he served as President of the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association (1996-2001).

Over the period 2003-2022, Doug Luey has served as Convenor for over 25 National Championships in Peewee, Bantam, Midget, Founders Cup, Minto Cup and most recently - the 2022 Mann Cup. Among his numerous accomplishments as a Builder include: playing an instrumental role in the establishment of Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association (2002); being a proud Member of the St. Catharines Old Boys Association (2003-present); General Manager Clarington Green Gaels (OLA Junior B) 2001-2005 – this team won Founders Cup in 2002 and 2004; Vice President of Junior to Major of the Ontario Lacrosse Association (2006-2011); Began annual trip to the Czech Republic to participate in the Aleš Hřebeský Memorial Tournament winning in 2007 and 2010; Commissioner (and Founder) of the OLA Junior C League 2008-2011; Founding member of L.E.A.P. Lacrosse Exposure Athletic Program (2011); Box Sector Chair of the Canadian Lacrosse Association (2011-2016); CLA Director of High Performance & International Relations (2017-2018); Founding Member of “Lacrosse in Motion” (2016), an organization dedicated to the introduction of lacrosse to new Canadians and; Commissioner of OLA Major Series Lacrosse (2017-2022).

Given his long service as a volunteer, Doug Luey has been recipient of many accolades including: OLA Presidents 20-year service Award (2005); Appointed Life Member of the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association (2006); Received CLA Recognition Award for Contribution (2011); First Past President of the Oshawa Blue Knights Minor Lacrosse Association (2011); Queen’s Jubilee Award (2012); Inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2014); OLA Creators Game 30-year service Award (2015); Inducted into the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 (as a member of the Clarington Green Gaels 2002 team).

Lynn Withers, the Interim Commissioner of Major Series Lacrosse shared her thoughts when informed of Doug Luey’s induction – “I have known Doug Luey for many years. I worked with Doug for several years during the Minor Nationals in Whitby and since 2017 with Major Series Lacrosse. Doug has always been a pleasure to work with. His Lacrosse resume speaks for itself and his induction into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame is well deserved”.

When asked to share his thoughts about his induction into the CLHOF, Doug Luey commented – “Obviously, my initial reaction was that I was quite pleased. To be recognized for a lifetime in the game by such a great institution was very gratifying. My next thought was very humbling as I can think of many others that are so deserving over myself but just didn't have someone submit the nomination on their behalf”.

When reflecting upon particular highlights regarding his Hall of Fame career, Doug Luey paused and responded, “The 2009 Green Gaels Founders silver medalist team always stands out not because of losing the gold medal game. Mostly because we had no less than nine players on that team that went on to play professionally. Not bad for a Junior B team. I am also very proud of the work we put into branding Major Series Lacrosse; it is unfortunate that I won't be involved to see the fruits of that labour going forward”.

Doug also wanted to speak about the people who had a significant impact on his extensive commitment and involvement in lacrosse. He spoke with fondness stating, “I must thank my family, particularly my wife of 42 years Nancy, for allowing me ‘to do my lacrosse thing’ for so many years. In addition, my parents and Mr. Jim Bishop had a huge impact on my personal life and the sport of lacrosse. Mom and Dad taught me the core values of integrity and honesty. Coach Bishop influenced my life with the importance of preparedness and commitment to any and all causes in life”.

Doug Luey has been an exceptional Builder and contributor to lacrosse for almost five decades. As a result, Doug Luey is being inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in the Builder category - Class of 2022.
